Today I came across a Big Think + article on EI (Emotional Intelligence), referencing Daniel Goleman’s work, including a short interview with him. I truly believe that EI skills makes great leaders.
When I read through the article, I saw the list of four distinct but interdependent components of EI, that Daniel talks about in his book Optimum. I had read the book, but reading this article made me stop and do quick assessment of my own EI skills, and thought, I can really see where I succeed and where I need to improve. For me, the “Self-management” is sometimes my most challenging. Managing my emotions when I’m stressed, especially when I have deadlines and things aren’t going the way I expect, can actually stop me from getting my work done and often stop my team from getting their work done. Not cool.
I can see this in my clients too, as they work towards getting all the right pieces in place to make their business run without them, and the stress to get everything done, at the right time, in the right way, by other people, not themselves, can really take them out of their ‘cool’.
Having great leaders in your business that can make decisions when things get stressful and get the work done right, only happens when you, as the owner and founder are being a great leader.
What EI component do you use the most, or have the most challenge with, as a leader in your business?
Here are the four components of EI mentioned in the article.
- Self-awareness. Understanding how you’re feeling.
- Self-management. Managing emotions when you’re upset, angry, or anxious.
- Social awareness. Employing empathy and caring for others.
- Relationship management. The ability to listen, handle conflict, and develop rapport.
