When you prepare your business to Run Without You, you receive three really valuable bonuses. Bonuses are like gifts to your business as well as for your life. You do this work — everyone benefits.
1) You have more time to do other things
I remember being at a networking event. I was chatting in a group of people talking about how they would like to build their businesses, make more money, do more. One person mentioned to a second person, “Oh, by the way, I have a referral for you.” The second person responded, “Thanks, but I cannot take any more clients right now. I’m too busy.”
Everyone was thinking, “Congrats, you are too busy. You must be doing so well?” But actually the opposite was true. They simply did not have any more of their own time to make anything beyond delivering their service. This meant they could not market to, or onboard new clients. They could not scale. They had no time to hire, nor train new people.
No one wants to be so busy they cannot do what needs to get done to ensure the business is consistently profitable.
Preparing your business to Run Without You, ensures that you are not the only person doing the work. Maybe, you could hire, train, onboard new clients and deliver the service, without you doing most of the work? Maybe you go on vacation while this happens?
2) You are not the reason someone would buy your business
When people ask me about the value of their business, I usually answer with two points: 1) I am not a certified business valuation specialist, but we could look at some basics to get an idea of where to start. 2) No one wants to buy ‘you’ when they buy the business. If the business is you, then what are you selling?
Preparing your business to Run Without You ensures that the business is not just you. You doing the emails, You managing your CRM, You creating memes in Canva, Your writing content, You as the brand face, You as the product delivery, You doing the business development, You doing the networking or speaking, You doing the social media… I think you get my point here.
You cannot be the only value in the business. Income must be able to be generated by other people. Products and services must be able to be delivered by other people. The operations should be able to transfer to another person and run well so incoming business is not lost in that transition.
If you want something you can sell, you need to remove yourself from the asset list.
3) Your business will grow
The side effect of having a business that can Run Without You is that more things can get done. Where you only had 24 hours in your own day (hopefully you are not working anywhere near 24 hours a day) to get everything done, you could then leverage hours from someone else’s day. When you are not the only one onboarding new clients, new clients can arrive into the business and start using your services, without you needed to book anything.
Imagine that things that you could get done, when you are not the only one having to do everything. Imagine how much more your business could do, when it is not just your day to manage the work.
Start Preparing
When you prepare your business to Run Without You, even if you are not close to thinking about leaving the business, or doubling its size, you create something that has options for your future, and benefits you, your clients, your team, and the future for your business and your life after your business.
Don’t leave this preparation until it is too late to make it valuable for you, start now, so you benefit now.
